Gareth is Interim Artistic Director of the Traverse Theatre having previously been Main-Stage Director In Residence at the Citizens Theatre, Artist In Residence at Imaginate International Childrens Festival and an Emerging Artist at the National Theatre of Scotland.
His shows include Ulster American by David Ireland, Arctic Oil by Clare Duffy, How To Disappear by Morna Pearson and Letters to Morrissey by Gary McNair for the Traverse Theatre. The Scottish Premiere of Yasmina Reza’s God of Carnage at the Tron Theatre and a sell-out production of Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting at the Citizens Theatre Glasgow and Kings Theatre Edinburgh.
Other productions include: Blackbird by David Harrower, Into That Darkness by Gitta Sereny, Vanya by Sam Holcroft (Citizens Theatre); Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas (Tron Theatre), Donald Robertson Is Not A Stand-Up Comedian and A Gamblers Guide To Dying by Gary McNair (Traverse Festival) as well as numerous large-scale community and Youth projects for the National Theatre of Scotland, The Tron Theatre and The Lyceum Edinburgh amongst others.
His work has toured extensively across the UK as well as transferring to Adelaide International Festival (Australia), Auckland Arts Festival (New Zealand), New York’s 59 East 59 (Brits off Broadway Festival) and Spoleto Festival (South Carolina, USA). His work has played a wide range of venues from rural church halls, to pubs and schools through to 1300 capacity theatres.
Gareth has won four Fringe Firsts Awards (2012, 2014, 2017, 2018), a Scottish Arts Club Award and a Carol Tambour Best Of Edinburgh Award. In 2019 his production of Ulster American won three CATS Awards (Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland) including Best New Play, Best Actress, Best Production.
